Today we are in Hanoi and will be doing a DIY Cheap Eats Food tour! We are so excited to be in our 5th country of Vietnam and so excited that today will be ALL ABOUT THE FOOD!
We head out in the morning and start our day at Bahn Mi Hoi An because there is no better way to start our first day in Vietnam than with a couple of Bahn Mis as this is a typical breakfast item here. We get one special with pork and one chicken Bahn Mi. The bread is so fresh and the meat has just the right amount of spice.
We have heard a lot about the coffee culture in Vietnam and we are very excited for our next stop at Cafe Nang 45 to try the famous egg coffee. The first egg coffee was made in Hanoi and the children of the man who started it have a couple of coffee shops around Hanoi and Cafe Nang 45 is one of them.
To make the egg coffee, they take several egg yolks, sugar, condensed milk, and honey and whisk it for about 10-15 minutes before pouring it over a very dark and strong shot of coffee. This place even serves the coffee over a lit candle. We were told by the staff to blow out the candle after a couple minutes and then stir the coffee well before drinking.
After our coffee, we walk around the city for a while before stopping at a noodle shop that catches our eye. There aren’t any tables available but a server just grabs a folded table and sets it up for us right on the sidewalk! We get chicken and beef pho and a couple of cokes and it was the perfect lunch.
We do some much needed planning for a couple hours before venturing back out for dinner, stopping first at Bahn Cuon Ba Hahn for bahn cuon. The process of making these is really fun to watch and it is all on display.
We make a quick stop on beer street for a beer before dinner and the crowds are pretty crazy. We learn that Vietnam is playing a BIG football game and once it starts the whole city seems to stop everything in order to watch!
After our beer we walk to Hong Hoai for banh xeo which translates to sizzling pancake. It is more of a savory dish with shrimp and vegetables and we are very grateful for the help of our server because we had no idea how to eat it. She shows us how to construct the perfect rice roll (not at all what we expected..) and we manage to devour the enormous pancake!
We had just enough room left for a sweet treat and the baguette from the Bahn Mi was a strong indication for the baking skills in this city so we make one last stop at a bakery before calling it a night!
We came in under $20 for EVERYTHING we ate (and drank) today! What a perfect first day in Vietnam!
